The paraclete

Some words in the Bible are notoriously difficult to translate. So much so that sometimes translators simply transliterate what is written in the original language. One such word is paraclete – a direct transliteration of the Greek word parakletos, used by John to describe the Holy Spirit.

It is a word which has its origins in the legal courts, meaning someone who is called alongside you. Hence, some translate it as advocate. I was thinking about this the other day when I asked for someone to stand behind me when ringing Stedman Cinques. As it is only recently that I have been ringing on higher numbers I find I frequently know what I meant to be doing and where I am but not always who I am meant to be doing it with. A paraclete can be a great help.

There is a great skill in standing behind someone – sensitively guiding people as required. Thank you to those who do this well and never be ashamed to ask for help if you need it.
